Wall Lights

Wall lights for the Art of Lighting

Wall lights, also called sconces or appliques, are the quiet workers of a lighting scheme. Mounted on the wall, they spread a soft light across its surface instead of casting it down from above, which makes a room feel larger and calmer in the evening. They are especially useful where there is no space for a lamp: along corridors and staircases, on either side of a bed in place of bedside lamps, and in entrance halls.

In living and dining rooms, a pair of wall lights can frame a fireplace, a mirror, a sideboard or a painting, giving symmetry and a sense of order. Light that grazes stone, plaster or panelling also brings out the character of the walls themselves. When choosing, consider the direction of the light, upwards, downwards or both, the finish, and how the pieces relate to a chandelier or ceiling light in the same room, so that metals and glass speak the same language. Wall lights usually need to be wired in, so they are best planned early in a renovation.
