A chandelier is often the first thing seen on entering a room and the last element chosen when decorating it. Hung above a dining table, it marks the centre of the room; in an entrance hall or a stairwell, it fills a tall space with light. Crystal has long been the material of choice because each cut facet breaks the light into reflections that move across walls and ceilings, so that a chandelier decorates a room even when it is switched off.
Size and proportion matter most. Above a dining table, a chandelier usually looks best a little narrower than the table and hung high enough for guests to see each other across it; in a living room or a hall, the ceiling height and the volume of the space set the scale. Baccarat, the crystal house founded in Lorraine in 1764, has lit palaces around the world, and its designs range from classical models to contemporary interpretations such as Philippe Starck's take on the Zénith chandelier.
