Trays / Vide Poche / Ashtrays

Trays, vide-poches and ashtrays
Small trays solve everyday questions of order. The French vide-poche, literally an empty-pocket, is the dish by the door or on a bedside table where keys, coins, rings and watches land at the end of the day. Larger trays gather bottles on a bar, perfumes on a dressing table or remote controls on a coffee table, and ashtrays, even in homes where no one smokes, are often kept as decorative objects or for cigars on a terrace.
The houses in this collection treat these modest pieces with real craft. Raynaud makes ashtrays in Limoges porcelain with its characteristic coloured and gilded decoration. Ercuis, the French silversmith founded in 1867, works in polished silver. Baccarat brings crystal and, with its Octogone collection, lacquered trays and coasters in a range of colours. Jonathan Adler adds wit with vide-poches and boxes, and a tray by the British designer Tom Dixon completes the mix. Placed by the entrance, on a desk or beside a bed, any of them turns a daily habit into a small ritual.
