Vases

Crystal, glass and porcelain vases

A vase lives two lives: filled with flowers, and empty, as an object in its own right. Choosing one starts with the flowers you like. Tall, narrow forms hold long stems upright, wide mouths let an arrangement open out, and low bowls suit short-stemmed blooms. Weight and base matter too, since a heavy crystal vase stays steady under a generous bouquet. The houses in this collection show how varied the answers can be.

Baccarat, founded in Lorraine in 1764, works its crystal into cut and faceted forms that throw light around a room; the vases pictured here include pieces from the Harcourt, Louxor and Octogone lines. Daum, founded in Nancy in 1878, is known for pâte de verre, in which coloured crystal is melted into a mould by the lost-wax method to give deep, sculptural colour. Venini, on Murano since 1921, blows and shapes its glass by hand; its Frozen collection gives the house's iconic vases a sandblasted, icy finish. Marie Daâge, finally, brings hand-painted porcelain to the vase, with the same mix of pattern and colour as her tableware.
