Lobmeyr

Lobmeyr is a renowned Austrian glassware company, founded in 1823 by Josef Lobmeyr in Vienna. A purveyor to the Imperial Court from its early years, Lobmeyr has a long-standing tradition of serving prestigious clients, including the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Kremlin. Notably, Lobmeyr chandeliers illuminate the Metropolitan Opera House. To this day, Lobmeyr glassware is entirely handcrafted—blown, cut, engraved, and polished by hand—preserving centuries-old craftsmanship. The company’s exclusive collection features designs ranging from the iconic works of Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos to contemporary collaborations with Ted Muehling, Formafantasma, and Michael Anastassiades.

The House of Lobmeyr

Lobmeyr has stayed in the hands of its founding family since 1823 and is run today by the sixth generation. Under Ludwig Lobmeyr, the founder's son, the firm invited the architects and artists of the day to design for it. In 1883 it worked with Thomas Edison's company on one of the first electric crystal chandeliers, the start of a lighting tradition that continues alongside its glassware.

The house is known for muslin glass, mouth-blown so thin that it seems almost weightless, and for drinking sets that have remained in production for generations. Among them are the Patrician set by Josef Hoffmann and set No. 248 by Adolf Loos, from 1931, whose heavy cut bases contrast with plain, straight sides. Each set comprises many shapes, from water and wine glasses to liqueur glasses, so a whole table can be laid in a single design.
